In 1969, the first packet-switching network was funded by the Pentagon’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).
The resulting ARPAnet linked four research facilities: UCLA, Stanford Research Institute, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah (each called a node).
